Don’t Be a Nike Leader. Don’t Just Do It.

Most people think leadership is about action. Taking charge. Making things happen.

That’s what they teach in management books, what corporate slogans reinforce—just do it.

But here’s the truth: great leaders don’t just do it. They make sure it’s the right thing, at the right time, in the right way.

Blind execution isn’t leadership. It’s just movement. And movement without direction is wasted effort.

If you want to be an elite leader, stop defaulting to action and start mastering deliberate execution.

1. Clarify the Game You’re Playing (Define Your Arena)

Before you act, know the game. The best leaders don’t waste energy swinging at everything—they know what arena they dominate.

What’s the ultimate outcome you’re driving toward? Who are the key players that determine success? What’s the real scoreboard (not just what others measure, but what actually moves the needle)?

Elite execution starts with radical clarity. If you’re taking action without answering these questions, you’re not leading—you’re just moving.

2. Choose the Play, Not Just the Effort (Decisive Strategy Over Busyness)

Amateurs mistake effort for impact. Elite leaders understand that strategy trumps sweat.

Before you rush into action, ask: “Is this the highest-leverage move?” Prioritize needle-moving decisions over low-impact busywork. Learn to say no to the distractions disguised as “opportunities.”

It’s not about how much you do. It’s about whether what you do actually matters.

3. Train Before the Battle (Preparation Over Performance Pressure)

Nike leaders jump into the game unprepared, hoping their raw energy will carry them through. Elite leaders prepare before the moment demands it.
